Having recently visited the Globe Theatre in London with my granddaughter, the phrase ‘to be or not to be, that is the question’ occurred to me when I read some research reports on Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in schools.
For instance, the British Educational Training and Technology Show (BETT) hold their yearly exhibition of suppliers and seminars in London. To ‘drum up’ interest in the Show, it advertised a quantitative survey of just over one thousand teachers in the UK regarding their use of AI as part of their work.
Well, it will probably be of no surprise to you that nearly half (49%) of teachers use AI at least monthly (Sutton Trust found 62%) . While just under half (44%) feel they are ‘cheating’ using AI.
However, the Sutton Trust has a more in-depth examination of this phenomena. I do urge you to read this report. Their research data revealed that private schools are ‘three times more likely than state schools to have a clear school-wide staff strategy on using AI’. Sutton Trust recommends that the government provides training, guidance, digital poverty support to families and monitor AI use in schools. It also recommends (tellingly) that the upcoming curriculum review, ‘should take account of the impact of AI on teaching and learning’.
